Live Streaming Blind Box Probability Rigging Scam: Streamers use backend scripts to lower rare item drop rates and induce high-amount spending

Victims are mostly young consumers aged 18 to 35, especially college students and white-collar workers who have just entered the workplace. They hold a strong curiosity and desire for possession regarding novel and scarce blind box items. At the same time, influenced by platform incentive mechanisms such as social gifts and leaderboards, they are prone to impulsive consumption and 'group-buying' mentalities. Lacking professional judgment regarding lottery probabilities, they tend to blindly trust the streamer's promotional rhetoric, resulting in massive expenditures and even debt after frequent gifting and order placement.

Who Gets Targeted

Victims are mostly young consumers aged 18 to 35, especially college students and white-collar workers who have just entered the workplace. They hold a strong curiosity and desire for possession regarding novel and scarce blind box items. At the same time, influenced by platform incentive mechanisms such as social gifts and leaderboards, they are prone to impulsive consumption and 'group-buying' mentalities. Lacking professional judgment regarding lottery probabilities, they tend to blindly trust the streamer's promotional rhetoric, resulting in massive expenditures and even debt after frequent gifting and order placement.

骗局怎么运作

  • Step 1: The streamer pre-sets the actual inventory and quantity of rare items for the blind box products in the live-streaming room, using a backend script to rigidly adjust the appearance rate of rare items to an extremely low level (e.g., 0.1%), while publicly claiming the probability is a transparent 20% or higher to create an illusion of 'high value.'
  • Step 2: During the live broadcast, the streamer uses exaggerated language (e.g., 'one-in-a-million,' 'thousand-yuan figure for only 9.9 yuan') to induce viewers to place orders immediately, while constantly refreshing the chat barrage and gift leaderboards to create a rush-buying atmosphere and boost users' herd mentality and impulsive spending tendency.
  • Step 3: The streamer embeds private-domain traffic redirection links in the live-streaming room, guiding users who have already placed orders to join WeChat groups or mini-programs, further pushing limited-time rush-buys, lottery bonuses, and other 'exclusive benefits,' while using secret codes or specific emojis to hint users to continue investing more gifts or money.
  • Step 4: Most of the blind boxes received by users are low-value goods or empty boxes. The streamer quickly handles negative reviews through a backend automated reply system, claiming it is a 'matter of luck,' and continues secondary marketing in the private domain, attempting to lock users who have already spent money into a high-frequency consumption path.
  • Step 5: After the platform is regulated or users file complaints, streamers typically delete the live broadcast playback, clear barrage records, or switch accounts to evade platform review and subsequent accountability, while reselling collected user data or using it for other subsequent monetization channels.

红旗信号(看到这些快跑)

  • 🚩 Extreme promotional slogans frequently appear in the live-streaming room, such as 'only 9.9 yuan to draw a thousand-yuan figure' and 'rarity rate is only 0.1%'
  • 🚩 The streamer repeatedly asks users to join private-domain groups or scan codes to enter mini-programs during the live broadcast, providing so-called 'exclusive lottery codes'
  • 🚩 Live broadcast playbacks are deleted, barrage records cannot be reviewed, or the platform prompts that the live broadcast has been taken down for violations
  • 🚩 Blind box product descriptions are vague, failing to indicate actual product types and quantities, writing only 'surprise' or 'random,' and packaging mostly consists of ordinary plastic bags or tissues
  • 🚩 The platform order page shows that the actual value of the product severely mismatches the promoted value, accompanied by a large volume of refund or complaint records

How to Protect Yourself

  • ✅ Always check whether the platform provides a publication of the actual lottery probabilities for blind box products before the live broadcast, and require merchants to issue lottery rules and prize-issuing vouchers;
  • ✅ Avoid directly sending gifts or making impulsive orders in the live-streaming room; verify the physical product pictures, specifications, and price matching on the official product page first;
  • ✅ If asked to join a private-domain group or scan a code to claim coupons, remain vigilant, verify the authenticity of the event through official customer service channels first, and never leak personal payment information;
  • ✅ When encountering products that do not match the promotion or receiving empty boxes, you can immediately submit a complaint on the platform, save chat records and payment vouchers, and request the platform to issue a refund or compensation in accordance with the 'E-Commerce Law';
  • ✅ Pay attention to the latest live-streaming e-commerce compliance guidelines issued by regulatory departments, especially requirements regarding the transparency of blind box lottery probabilities, and promptly unfollow violating streamer accounts.
