AI livestream shopping robots promote counterfeit brands, inducing high-priced purchases

The main victims are middle-aged and elderly consumers lacking discernment, young women pursuing brand premiums, and online shopping novices with blind trust in novel technologies. They are generally unvigilant about the authenticity of AI-synthesized content, easily misled by sales pitches like "celebrity same-style" or "official authorization," and impulse-buy under the urged atmosphere of the livestream room. According to a notification on an AI livestream fraud case handled by the Shanghai Putuo District Procuratorate, nearly 50 victims were verified, mostly aged 60 to 70, with cumulative defrauded amounts exceeding 10,000 RMB. Although single transaction losses were small, most victims considered themselves unlucky due to unfamiliarity with rights-protection channels (Shanghai Putuo District People's Procuratorate notification, 2026-08-04).

Who Gets Targeted

The main victims are middle-aged and elderly consumers lacking discernment, young women pursuing brand premiums, and online shopping novices with blind trust in novel technologies. 骗局怎么运作

  • Step 1: The platform uses AI algorithms to generate a human-like anchor image, using high-quality voice synthesis and virtual avatars to create a realistic livestreaming atmosphere, while generating a large volume of "positive reviews" in the live chat and comment sections. This step exploits the audience's psychological trust in the anchor's appearance and interaction.
  • Step 2: Based on big data analysis, the AI bot precisely locks onto target user profiles—especially middle-aged and elderly people and brand seekers—and then frequently pops up keywords in the livestream room such as "limited-time special," "celebrity same-style," and "official authorization" to guide users into generating purchasing impulses.
  • Step 3: During the livestream, the bot displays high-quality rendered images or short videos of counterfeit goods, accompanied by exaggerated oral descriptions such as "lowest price across the entire network" and "limited-edition flash sale," while using countdown timers and purchase links to create a sense of urgency, making users mistakenly believe the items are genuine.
  • Step 4: After clicking the link to enter a third-party mall or private domain mini-program, the AI bot continues to provide attentive "one-on-one" customer service, "verifying" the authenticity of the goods via phone or video, further eliminating user concerns and facilitating high-priced payments.
  • Step 5: After the transaction is completed, the platform uses low-cost packaging and logistics to send inferior knockoff products, and even uses AI after receipt to automatically generate positive reviews for padding, forming a disguised positive feedback loop to prevent victims from secondary rights protection and expand the scale of fraud.

红旗信号(看到这些快跑)

  • 🚩 The AI anchor does not feature a real person showing their face; the image is entirely CG-rendered or deepfaked;
  • 🚩 The livestream room frequently features countdown flash sales and prices significantly higher than similar products on the market;
  • 🚩 The product page lacks official authorization certificates or brand official flagship store links;
  • 🚩 The anchor claims "the only one on the entire network" or "limited release," but searching for similar products reveals multiple low-priced sellers;
  • 🚩 The platform comment section contains a large number of positive reviews with identical formats, mostly from anonymous accounts or machine-generated nicknames

How to Protect Yourself

  • ✅ When watching livestream shopping, first confirm whether the anchor is labeled as an "AI virtual anchor" or "robot," and remain vigilant toward unlabeled anchors;
  • ✅ Before purchasing, verify product authorization information and price ranges through the brand's official website or official flagship store, and do not blindly trust limited-time specials in livestream rooms;
  • ✅ Use official payment channels and save transaction records. If the received product does not match the description, promptly initiate rights protection within the platform and retain chat screenshots;
  • ✅ Pay attention to consumer warnings issued by authoritative institutions, join consumer associations, or use third-party authenticity query tools to conduct multi-channel price comparisons for high-priced brand goods.
