Origin

Airtable started around 2012. The three founders wanted to free database capabilities from programmers and turn them into a product similar to a spreadsheet but with a relational database, custom fields, and a drag-and-drop interface. The team did not build a rapid prototype; instead, it spent a long time studying precedents such as HyperCard and the Xerox PARC graphical interface, and only after confirming the market potential of a horizontal product among heavy database users and enterprise business departments did it begin building an early prototype. Ultimately, PMF came from business departments first trying it through self-service and then spreading it within the enterprise.

Milestones

2012
Research and Prototyping Inflection Point
The founding team spent a great deal of time studying early no-code precedents such as HyperCard and the Xerox PARC GUI, rather than taking the Lean Startup rapid-prototyping path. Only after confirming the horizontal market potential of enterprise heavy-duty databases plus views plus business logic did they start building an early prototype that resembled a spreadsheet but supported fields, links, and drag-and-drop. In an interview with First Round Review, Andrew Ofstad emphasized that this long period of groundwork avoided bandwagon-chasing and laid the foundation for subsequent template iteration and departmental self-service expansion. This period lasted from 2012 to 2013.
2014
PMF and Self-Service Expansion PMF
Airtable found product-market fit through templates and departmental self-service use; business teams in marketing, operations, sales, and other functions could build systems such as CRM and project tracking without IT. The product did not rely on a sales team pushing it hard; users first validated value in small-team scenarios and then it spread naturally through the organization. In this stage, customer count and ARR entered a steady growth curve, laying the foundation for the PLG model. This period lasted from 2014 to 2016.
2021
High-Valuation Financing Growth
After its Series F in 2021, Airtable's pre-money valuation was about USD 11 billion, total funding reached USD 1.36 billion, and its peak valuation exceeded USD 11.7 billion. At the time, the market rewarded growth-stage SaaS with high multiples, and Airtable was seen as a leading player in the no-code database category. This high valuation became the baseline against which later valuation swings were measured.
2022
Shift from Growth to Profitability Pressure Failure
In 2022, after 2021 the capital logic shifted from growth to profitability, and Airtable's original valuation framework came under systematic compression. The company began shifting from serving small-team self-service scenarios to serving large enterprises, requiring it to build up permissions, security, integrations, and other capabilities. At the same time, AI coding tools such as Cursor and other low-code alternatives emerged, undermining the original need to build systems without writing code, and Airtable's growth story was reassessed by capital.
2025
AI Transformation and Repositioning Turning Point
In 2025, CEO Howie Liu publicly acknowledged the need to re-found Airtable; the company repositioned itself as an AI-native App Platform and launched capabilities such as AI agents Omni and Superagent. Liu personally returned to frontline coding, and the organization was restructured to run fast teams and slow teams in parallel, emphasizing prototype-first and vibe-first approaches. ARR reached about USD 480 million in June 2026, up more than 20% year over year, showing that the AI transformation brought some growth repair.
2026
Acquired by Bending Spoons Turning Point
On August 4, 2026, Italy's Bending Spoons completed an all-cash acquisition of Airtable, with an enterprise value of USD 128.5 million and equity value including net cash of about USD 225 million to USD 230 million. Compared with its peak valuation of over USD 11.7 billion in 2021, this was a decline of about 81%; the enterprise value was only about 2.7x ARR, whereas in 2021 the median for comparable SaaS was 15x. Bending Spoons, known for long-term investment and optimization after acquiring Evernote and WeTransfer, took over, and Airtable entered an integration phase.

Turning Points

  • In the early days, it abandoned rapid prototyping and spent a long time studying precedents such as HyperCard before building the product, avoiding bandwagon-chasing but lengthening the time to market
  • After its Series F in 2021, its valuation exceeded USD 11.7 billion as capital heavily rewarded growth-stage SaaS; afterward, the valuation was systematically re-rated
  • In 2025, CEO Howie Liu personally returned to frontline coding and repositioned Airtable as an AI application platform
  • In August 2026, it was acquired by Bending Spoons at an enterprise value of USD 128.5 million, with its valuation down about 81% from the peak
  • Among its 500,000 customers, 80% of the Fortune 100 continued to use it, but the rise of AI coding tools eroded the unique value of the no-code database

Failures & Pitfalls

  • After 2021, it shifted from serving small teams to large enterprises and was forced to catch up on permissions, security, and integrations, failing to achieve a profitability turnaround during the high-valuation window
  • After AI coding tools such as Cursor rose, the original need to build systems without writing code was displaced, and Airtable failed to build AI-native value in time
  • Its tens-of-billions high valuation depended on a growth narrative rather than profitability; after capital shifted, its enterprise value compressed to 2.7x ARR
  • AI-native products Omni and Superagent failed to prevent the company from being acquired, and the CEO twice publicly acknowledged the need to re-found Airtable
  • After cumulative funding of USD 1.36 billion in 2021, the 2026 acquisition enterprise value was only USD 128.5 million, leaving investors almost unable to recover their principal

关键成功要素

  • It implemented a no-code database with a spreadsheet interface plus a relational database, letting business departments bypass IT to build their own systems
  • The PLG model relied on departmental self-service trials followed by intra-enterprise expansion, lowering sales costs and broadening reach
  • In the early days, it spent a long time studying precedents such as HyperCard and Xerox PARC to validate the horizontal market, avoiding wasted rapid prototyping
  • In 2026, ARR was about USD 480 million, with 500,000 customers and 80% of the Fortune 100 using it, indicating stable real demand
  • In the AI era, it repositioned itself as an AI-native App Platform and launched AI agent capabilities, but this failed to change its acquisition fate
  • In 2026, it was acquired by Bending Spoons, becoming a benchmark case for the end of the high-valuation SaaS era

Lessons

  • A high valuation peak is not a moat; when capital logic shifts from growth to profitability, a valuation can shrink by 81%
  • The gateway value of no-code databases was weakened by AI coding tools, so platforms need to build AI-native capabilities ahead of time
  • PLG self-service expansion can acquire customers at low cost, but serving large enterprises requires catching up on permissions, security, integrations, and other capabilities
  • Founders studying precedents over a long period can avoid bandwagon-chasing, but too long a buildup can also miss the time window
  • Even with 20% annual ARR growth and broad penetration of the Fortune 100, if the growth logic is displaced, a company may still be acquired at a low price
  • The acquirer's Bending Spoons-style long-term investment and optimization is one consolidation path for SaaS assets in distress

Competitors / Peers

In the no-code database and low-code application space, Airtable faces direct competitors such as Notion, Smartsheet, and Monday.com. Notion entered from document collaboration and formed a lighter no-code workspace; Smartsheet serves large enterprises with project and worksheet management; and Monday.com covers marketing, sales, and operations teams with visual boards. AI coding tools such as Cursor and Copilot further lower the barrier for business users to build their own tools, creating indirect substitution for Airtable. Open-source alternatives such as NocoDB and Baserow offer self-hosted no-code databases, weakening Airtable's bargaining power in enterprise private-deployment scenarios.
