Wombo Dream Auto-Renewal Trap: Free Trial Becomes Monthly Fee, Refund Channels Closed

Primary victims are young users pursuing trendy AI painting features, including students, designers, and social media content creators. Attracted by fantasy art images generated by Wombo Dream on social media, they tend to favor the convenience of 'one-click generation' and lack the patience to carefully review subscription terms and billing details. Meanwhile, many mistakenly believe the subscription is a one-time purchase or only covers the initial experience fee, having a vague understanding of auto-renewal rules. They continue to be charged repeatedly after the trial period ends without receiving clear reminders. Upon discovering the charges, they attempt to seek customer support for rights protection, only to find refund channels closed, trapping them in a predicament with nowhere to appeal.

Who Gets Targeted

Primary victims are young users pursuing trendy AI painting features, including students, designers, and social media content creators. 骗局怎么运作

  • Step 1: Using a free trial or an ultra-low first-month price (such as $1) as bait, a subscription window pops up when users download the app or click to generate an image. The page promotes '7-day free trial' or 'first-week special' in eye-catching large text, while the specific auto-renewal terms are hidden in small gray text at the bottom of the page or require expanding a menu. Most users click confirm without reading, thereby implicitly agreeing to the subsequent continuous deduction agreement.
  • Step 2: Taking advantage of users frequently using the app during the trial period, no prominent reminder is sent regarding the imminent expiration or upcoming charge of the trial. It is only briefly mentioned through in-app messages or backend notifications, which many users never check. After the trial period ends, the system automatically deducts high fees weekly or monthly from the user's bound payment account (such as credit cards or payment platforms linked to Apple App Store or Google Play), typically several times or even dozens of times the first-month price, achieving an imperceptible conversion from 'trial' to 'monthly subscription'.
  • Step 3: After the deduction is completed, if users discover abnormal bank or payment bills and enter the app to find the refund or subscription cancellation entry, they find the interface design extremely concealed. Clicking 'Help' or 'Contact Us' only provides an automated chatbot customer service with no option to transfer to a human agent; the submitted 'refund application' form often disappears without a trace, with no email confirmation or processing time commitment, effectively shutting down the user's appeal channel.
  • Step 4: If users apply for a refund directly to the Apple App Store or Google Play, the platforms make excuses claiming that 'this transaction complies with subscription terms of service' or 'requires developer confirmation'. Meanwhile, Wombo's development team often chooses not to respond or confirm refund requests from application stores, leading to the rejection of refund requests and leaving users unable to recover the deducted funds.
  • Step 5: If users attempt to expose and defend their rights on social media (such as Twitter, Reddit), the Wombo account responds with a standardized script stating 'Please contact us through in-app support channels', without publishing direct contact information such as phone numbers or email addresses, nor providing substantive solutions for individual cases. Due to the small amount deducted each time (such as tens of RMB or a few dollars), some users eventually choose to give up pursuing the claim considering the time and communication costs of rights protection, which in turn encourages the continued operation of this model.

红旗信号(看到这些快跑)

  • 🚩 Promotional language for the free trial or low-priced first month on the subscription page is extremely prominent, while key information such as renewal prices and billing cycles is presented in small print or collapsed menus, with the 'auto-renewal' option checked by default.
  • 🚩 No obvious 'Cancel Subscription' or 'Refund' entry can be found inside the app, and the help center only provides automated robot responses without the ability to transfer to human customer service.
  • 🚩 No push notifications, text messages, or email reminders regarding upcoming charges are received before or after the end of the trial period, which can be seen as an important sign of deliberate concealment by the platform.
  • 🚩 The name of the charging entity seen by the user from the deduction bill (such as Wombo Studios) does not match the app name they know, or the deduction amount does not match the price claimed at the time of subscription.
  • 🚩 Searching social media and app store review sections reveals a large number of complaints about 'random charges' and 'unable to get refunds', with a considerable proportion of user feedback remaining unresolved.
  • 🚩 The payment agreement contains predatory terms such as 'all fees collected are non-refundable' and 'the final interpretation right of subscription services belongs to the developer', similar to clauses exempting oneself from liability.

真实案例

  • In late 2025, a female user filed a complaint on the Consumer Protection platform, stating that after downloading Wombo Dream, she was charged approximately 38 RMB before the trial period expired. When she attempted to cancel the subscription and apply for a refund, she found no refund channel inside the app, and the customer service robot only repeated 'Please provide the order number' with no human follow-up. Ultimately, the funds could not be recovered.
  • According to public reports, a developer reported in a community that they used Wombo Dream to generate commercial assets and were cumulatively charged over $200 because the monthly subscription renewal amount was much higher than the promoted first-month price. When contacting app store customer service, they were told confirmation from the developer was required. However, the Wombo team failed to respond to the refund request within two weeks, and the refund ended in failure due to 'developer unconfirmed'.
  • A college student user stated that they downloaded Wombo Dream out of curiosity to make avatars, noticing only the '3-day free trial' button when starting. As a result, their bank card was charged for three consecutive months after the trial period ended, only discovering the anomaly when checking electronic statements. When calling ICBC customer service to apply for a chargeback, they were informed that proof of 'failure to cancel subscription' must be provided, otherwise the bank could not intervene, leaving them to accept the loss.
  • In September 2025, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced a historic $2.5 billion settlement with Amazon on September 25: the FTC determined that Amazon used deceptive tactics to enroll consumers in Prime memberships without their consent and made the cancellation process extremely difficult. The settlement includes a $1 billion civil penalty and $1.5 billion in consumer refunds, with approximately 35 million affected consumers receiving full relief. • In November 2022, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced a $100 million settlement with internet telephone service provider Vonage on November 3: the FTC determined that the company used 'dark patterns' to make it difficult for consumers to cancel services, and even continued illegal charges after consumers directly spoke with customer service and requested cancellation. Vonage was required to pay $100 million in refunds, provide simple and transparent cancellation procedures, and cease charging fees without consumer consent. Official Stance

  • In July 2023, the China Consumers Association released the 'Consumer Rights Protection Report in the Online Consumption Field', explicitly pointing out that certain apps mislead consumers into subscribing to auto-renewal services using gimmicks like 'free trial' or 'low-price activation', while channels for canceling subscriptions and obtaining refunds are obstructed, suspected of infringing on consumers' right to know and fair trade rights.
  • In March 2024, the State Administration for Market Regulation issued the 'Measures for the Supervision and Administration of Online Trading' (Order No. 58), stipulating that auto-renewal services must remind consumers in a prominent manner 5 days in advance and provide simple ways to cancel or modify services; enterprises failing to comply will face penalties.
  • In January 2026, CNR published a report titled 'Four Major Traps of Online Platform Member Auto-Renewal Exposed: Read the Agreement Carefully Before Activating', summarizing tactics such as inducing activation, ambiguous billing, hidden barriers, and subscription cancellation difficulties, and specifically reminding consumers to guard against subscription traps of AI applications.
  • In September 2026, the Cyberspace Administration of China publicized typical cases of the 'Qinglang - Cracking Down on Chaotic Practices in AI Applications' campaign, heavily exposing problems such as auto-renewal violations and content violations in a batch of applications including AI painting and AI generation, and urging relevant app stores to remove or rectify problematic applications.

How to Protect Yourself

  • ✅ Before paying any subscription fees, be sure to read the subscription terms, renewal cycles, and cancellation methods completely, paying special attention to instructions related to 'auto-renewal'; remain vigilant about free trials, assuming charges will occur as soon as the trial ends.
  • ✅ After activating a subscription, immediately check and manage it in your phone's system settings (iOS 'Subscriptions' or Android 'Payments & Subscriptions'), record the renewal date, and set a calendar reminder to proactively check and decide whether to cancel one day before the renewal date.
  • ✅ Prioritize using Alipay or WeChat Pay's 'Passwordless Payment/Auto-Deduction Management' function, controlling each collection through the billing page. Once abnormal charges are discovered, you can initiate an appeal immediately, avoiding the inability to trace funds caused by direct bank card binding.
  • ✅ Upon discovering abnormal charges, immediately screenshot and preserve evidence such as the subscription process, charge notifications, and customer service conversations, and initiate complaints through third-party platforms like Consumer Protection and Heimao Complaints, while also lodging complaints with official app stores to request refunds.
  • ✅ For larger amounts or multiple charges, you can call UnionPay customer service or your card-issuing bank to apply for 'disputed transaction processing', informing them that it was an auto-deduction without full consent and requesting fund recovery; banks have an obligation to investigate upon receiving a written application.
