The 'Mr Pips' Financial Mega-Scam in Vietnam: A 160 Billion VND Black Hole Under the Guise of AI Investment and Crypto Wealth Management

Victims are primarily small and medium-sized investors in Vietnam, including individual merchants, retirees, working-class individuals, and young people with limited knowledge of cryptocurrencies. They were generally lured by promises of 'high returns, low risk, and AI-powered smart trading,' driven by a desire for quick wealth through passive income. Lacking the ability to discern financial products and investment risks, they were easily deceived by superficial endorsements from 'celebrities' and 'corporate entities.' After being lured by small initial returns, they gradually lowered their guard and increased their investments until they lost everything.

骗局怎么运作

  • Step 1: Establishing multi-layered shell companies—The gang led by 'Mr Pips' set up at least 81 shell companies across Vietnam, disguised as cross-industry groups. They rented offices in prime locations in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to create the illusion of legitimate fintech enterprises, facilitating business promotion and fund collection.
  • Step 2: Packaging 'AI Smart Investment Platforms'—They developed and operated multiple fake forex, stock, and cryptocurrency trading platforms, claiming to use 'AI algorithms' to automatically capture high-yield opportunities in global markets, with annual returns as high as 30% to 60%, supported by forged profit charts and testimonial videos.
  • Step 3: Leveraging influencers and social media—The mastermind, 'Mr Pips,' a TikToker with hundreds of thousands of followers, showcased a luxurious lifestyle in short videos to build a 'financial genius' persona. Once he gained attention, he directed followers to download investment apps and participate in 'principal-protected, high-interest' wealth management projects.
  • Step 4: Cultivating trust through small payouts—Initially, the platform fulfilled small withdrawal requests on time, leading victims to believe the platform was reliable. They encouraged victims to invite friends and family, forming a pyramid-style network where 'upline' investors received commissions based on the investment amounts of their 'downlines,' accelerating the growth of the fund pool.
  • Step 5: Withdrawal failure and absconding—Once the fund pool reached a certain scale, the platform froze victim accounts under pretexts such as 'system maintenance,' 'risk control audits,' or 'account anomalies.' They then shut down the platform, disbanded social media groups, and transferred the funds. After victims reported the crimes, police discovered that the funds had been laundered through multi-layered accounts, cryptocurrencies, and purchases of gold and real estate.

  • 🚩 Promised annual returns are extremely high, generally exceeding 20% or even 60%, far surpassing the average returns of legitimate financial products.
  • 🚩 The platform's domain registration is recent, and the operating entity is an offshore or shell company established shortly before the launch, with no disclosure of regulatory licenses.
  • 🚩 Promotional materials frequently use buzzwords like 'AI smart,' 'quantitative trading,' and 'principal-protected high returns' without providing transparent details on underlying assets or quantitative models.
  • 🚩 Customer service and promoters refuse to provide paper contracts or formal agreements, communicating only through unofficial channels like Telegram or WeChat groups.
  • 🚩 The scheme encourages the recruitment of downlines, using 'referral bonuses' and 'team performance' incentives, which are clear characteristics of a Ponzi scheme.
  • 🚩 Withdrawal processes are obstructed by demands for 'taxes,' 'security deposits,' or 'unfreezing fees,' with the required amounts constantly increasing.

How to Protect Yourself

  • ✅ Maintain high vigilance against any investment project promising 'principal protection and high returns.' Be cautious if the annualized return exceeds 8%, and consider anything over 15% as high-risk or a scam.
  • ✅ Before investing, use tools like Qichacha or similar services to verify a company's paid-in capital, business anomalies, and judicial risk records. Confirm if they hold local financial regulatory licenses (e.g., permits from the State Securities Commission or the Central Bank of Vietnam).
  • ✅ Do not download so-called 'investment apps' through unofficial channels. Refuse any links or QR codes from unknown sources; if a download is necessary, verify it through official app stores.
  • ✅ Properly save all investment screenshots, chat logs, and transfer receipts. If you notice abnormal withdrawal issues, report them immediately to the police or local financial regulatory authorities, and join other victims to file a collective report.
  • ✅ Remember that 'recruiting downlines' is a variation of pyramid schemes. Do not lower your guard due to recommendations from friends or high commissions, and never lend your ID or bank cards to others for 'account opening' purposes.
