Mining Max AI Cloud: A Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) Ponzi Scheme Disguised as AI Cloud Mining

Victims are primarily middle-aged and elderly investors in South Korea, as well as ordinary working-class individuals lacking technical knowledge of Bitcoin mining. Many were recruited by acquaintances, key figures in community-based pyramid schemes, or offline promotional seminars. They generally believed that AI could optimize mining machine yields and were lured by daily rebates and high-level referral commissions, driven by the desire for quick wealth. Due to information asymmetry, many could not distinguish between real mining farms and false claims, only realizing they had been defrauded when the platform stopped allowing withdrawals.

Who Gets Targeted

骗局怎么运作

  • Step 1: Packaging the AI cloud mining concept. The project claimed that Mining Max possessed AI algorithms capable of optimizing mining hash rates and electricity costs, allowing investors to earn daily mining rewards without purchasing physical hardware. Offline seminars showcased fake photos of server rooms, hash rate charts, and alleged strategic partnerships to create an illusion of technical prowess.
  • Step 2: Attracting entry with high daily rebates. Investors paid thousands to tens of thousands of dollars to purchase various tiers of cloud mining contracts, with the platform promising fixed daily returns and an annualized yield far exceeding market norms. Initially, the platform paid rebates on time to create an illusion of stable profitability, inducing investors to invest more capital.
  • Step 3: Implementing multi-level referral incentives. The platform encouraged investors to recruit new members, taking a percentage of new investments as referral commissions and team management bonuses based on hierarchy. This multi-level structure motivated early participants to actively recruit friends and family, forming a typical Ponzi scheme expansion model.
  • Step 4: Using new capital to pay old investors. The platform had no real mining farms or only a negligible amount of equipment; rebates relied entirely on funds from new investors. When new capital was insufficient to cover rebates, operators launched short-term promotions or limited-time double-yield offers to stimulate more deposits and delay the collapse.
  • Step 5: Suspending withdrawals and disappearing. Once the fund pool reached a certain scale, the platform suspended withdrawals citing system upgrades, mining farm inspections, or market volatility. The operations team then deleted the website, disbanded community groups, and transferred the assets. Investors were unable to log in, losing their entire principal, while their uplines also went silent.

Official Stance

  • In December 2017, South Korean prosecutors publicly announced the indictment of 21 individuals linked to Mining Max, noting that the company was suspected of defrauding investors through multi-level rebate schemes.
  • The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) of South Korea has repeatedly issued warnings, advising investors to be cautious of high-yield rebate projects under the name of cryptocurrency mining, emphasizing that most such platforms lack financial licenses.
  • The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) initiated enforcement actions against similar cases like Mining Automatic in 2026, emphasizing that illegal securities offerings and Ponzi structures under the guise of AI mining constitute fraud and can serve as a regulatory reference for similar cases.

How to Protect Yourself

  • ✅ Verify the authenticity of mining farms: Demand that project parties provide independently verifiable mining farm addresses, electricity contracts, and proof of hash rate; do not trust promotional images or videos.
  • ✅ Reject multi-level rebates: Any mining project that encourages the recruitment of new members and offers commissions based on hierarchy can generally be classified as a Ponzi scheme and should be avoided.
  • ✅ Check regulatory filings: Before investing, confirm whether the project party holds valid financial or securities qualifications through the websites of the South Korean Financial Supervisory Service or relevant national regulatory bodies.
  • ✅ Beware of ultra-high fixed returns: Maintain high vigilance against projects promising daily rebates with annualized yields significantly higher than industry averages, and guard against Ponzi traps.
  • ✅ Protect personal information and funds: Do not entrust exchange account permissions or large assets to so-called cloud mining platforms to avoid secondary victimization.
