Genetic Testing Scam: Free testing with false reports of fatal genetic mutations to push high-priced gene repair supplements

The main victims are elderly people living alone or apart from their children, mostly urban seniors over 60 with limited pensions, disproportionately women, who encounter such marketing through community WeChat groups, offline health lectures, and private live-streaming rooms. Generally lacking professional judgment regarding high-tech concepts like 'genetic testing' and 'stem cell repair', they are easily moved by lecturers disguised as medical experts. Combined with a fear of serious illness and aging, and wishful thinking about 'free' offers and longevity, they tend to drop their guard in the face of information asymmetry. Once frightened by fake reports of 'fatal genetic mutations', losses easily range from thousands to tens of thousands of yuan. A fraud case targeting the elderly solved by Shanghai police involved over 1,000 offenses with an amount exceeding 3 million yuan (Announcement by the Qingpu Branch of the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau, 2026-05-26).

Who Gets Targeted

The main victims are elderly people living alone or apart from their children, mostly urban seniors over 60 with limited pensions, disproportionately women, who encounter such marketing through community WeChat groups, offline health lectures, and private live-streaming rooms. Generally lacking professional judgment regarding high-tech concepts like 'genetic testing' and 'stem cell repair', they are easily moved by lecturers disguised as medical experts. 骗局怎么运作

  • Step 1: The marketing team promotes a 'Free Genetic Testing' campaign through WeChat groups, short video platforms, or community apps commonly used by the elderly, claiming cooperation with authoritative hospitals or research institutions and using celebrity or doctor personas to increase credibility.
  • Step 2: Victims fill out personal information in live streams or private chats and receive a testing kit. The kit actually contains no testing equipment and is merely an ordinary saliva collection tube to avoid technical costs.
  • Step 3: The backend uses forged software to generate a 'fatal genetic mutation' report marked with high-risk conditions such as cancer or Alzheimer's, accompanied by exaggerated medical explanations and urgent wording like 'Your genes have undergone fatal mutations and require immediate intervention.'
  • Step 4: Testing consultants (mostly disguised as 'medical doctors') proactively contact victims, playing so-called professional interpretation videos and emphasizing that failure to promptly supplement 'gene repair capsules' will lead to irreversible health damage, creating a sense of urgency.
  • Step 5: They push exorbitant gene repair supplements, usually priced around 30,000 yuan, claiming the cost price is only a few hundred yuan, with packaging printed with terms like 'clinically verified' and 'national patent', demanding a one-time payment or an advance deposit.
  • Step 6: If victims raise questions, the scam team delays by making excuses such as 'incomplete official registration' or 'regulatory authorities are currently investigating', or even redirects them to other 'formal channels' to further stall time and collect additional fees.

How to Protect Yourself

  • ✅ Before undergoing any free testing, verify whether the institution possesses legal qualifications issued by the National Health Commission or the National Medical Products Administration; verification can be done via official websites or hotlines.
  • ✅ Maintain rational skepticism toward test reports, especially when urgent phrasing like 'fatal mutation' or 'must be used immediately' appears, and consult regular hospitals or licensed doctors immediately.
  • ✅ Do not easily trust health product promotions that require upfront payment or large advance deposits. Any regular medicine or health product should come with a standard invoice and product batch number.
  • ✅ Join local elderly anti-fraud WeChat groups or follow community anti-fraud publicity to enhance vigilance against private live streams and WeChat group marketing.
