Silent Call Voiceprint Theft and Secondary Synthesis Scam: Cloning Voices to Defraud Friends and Relatives

The victim population has typical socially linked characteristics. The first layer of victims consists of ordinary people who answer 'silent calls' without knowing it; their psychological weakness lies in a lack of vigilance toward unfamiliar calls, and they often instinctively speak to confirm who is there. The second layer of victims are friends and relatives in their contact lists; they naturally trust a 'familiar voice' and are highly likely to abandon cross-verification under anxious emotions. Elderly people living alone, grassroots corporate employees, and groups with insufficient awareness of new AI scams are especially likely to fall into the trap.

骗局怎么运作

  • Scammers use caller ID spoofing software and mass-calling systems to place silent calls or extremely short 'one-ring' hang-up calls to target groups. If victims call back or answer and make sounds such as 'hello' or 'who is this,' the backend automatically records and captures a clean voiceprint sample from the victim, all without the victim's awareness.
  • After obtaining the voiceprint sample, scammers input it into an open-source AI voice cloning model for training. With only a few seconds of material, they can generate a highly realistic cloned voice that not only imitates timbre but also adjusts tone and emotion, making the synthesized speech sufficient to pass conventional auditory trust checks.
  • Scammers use illegally obtained contact list information to initiate targeted contact with the victim's friends, relatives, or colleagues. Using the cloned synthesized voice, they send voice messages or make direct calls, fabricating emergencies such as 'I had a car accident and urgently need compensation' or 'I'm having cash flow difficulties,' greatly increasing the victim's psychological panic.
  • After completely breaking down the victim's psychological defenses, scammers ask the victim to immediately transfer money to a designated bank account, or use offline cash handover to evade fund tracing. To prevent complications, they often set an extremely short fundraising time window, forcing the victim to send money before there is time to verify authenticity.
  • After completing the fund transfer, scammers quickly use underground banks, virtual currency, and other channels to launder money and split the proceeds, while destroying relevant communication records and voiceprint training data. This rapid evidence-destruction mechanism makes it difficult for police to obtain effective leads in later investigations.

红旗信号(看到这些快跑)

  • 🚩 Receiving silent calls, or the other party says nothing after the call connects and then hangs up, and such unknown numbers call in frequently.
  • 🚩 A friend or relative suddenly sends a voice plea for help through an unknown number or a new WeChat account; the voice sounds similar, but the tone is unusually urgent and involves a request for money.
  • 🚩 There is slight electronic noise or intermittent breaks in the background audio during a call or voice message, and the AI-synthesized voice has unnatural pauses in complex sentences.
  • 🚩 The other party refuses video call verification, or during a video call their face is blurred or they use excuses to cover the camera, insisting only on voice communication.
  • 🚩 You are rushed and pressured at extreme speed, asked to keep absolute secrecy and not hang up to verify, and strongly demanded to complete the transfer within a very short time.

真实案例

  • In February 2026, Guangming Daily reported an AI voice-imitation scam targeting elderly people: Wu Mou-tao, following instructions from his handler, went to Huangshi City, Hubei Province, impersonated an identity to collect fraud proceeds in person, and then the handler used AI voice-imitation technology to simulate the voice of the victim's relative and impersonate the relative to gain trust, defrauding three elderly people of a total of 60,000 yuan in cash.
  • In April 2026, Xinhua News Agency's 'Xinhua Investigation' reported an AI 'customer service' phone scam: Auntie Wang in Jinchang City received a call from someone claiming to be an official customer service representative of a short video platform, informing her that her account had activated a livestream membership with an automatic monthly charge of 800 yuan. After the elderly person downloaded an app as instructed, more than 100,000 yuan in her bank card was transferred away; the Jinchuan Branch of the Jinchang Municipal Public Security Bureau in Gansu Province has solved a similar telecom and online fraud case. Official Stance

  • On July 22, 2026, national security authorities issued a reminder, explicitly stating that 'what you hear may be false' has become a new type of scam tactic, warning the public to be vigilant against silent unknown calls that hide voiceprint collection traps, and not to converse or make sounds casually with unknown callers.
  • On December 15, 2025, China National Radio (CNR), together with police, released the report 'What You Hear May Be False: AI Voice-Imitation Scams Have Already Fooled Many Elderly People,' pointing out that AI voice-imitation fraud cases occur frequently and calling on the public to add double verification for calls from strangers and abnormal acquaintances.
  • On April 28, 2026, Xinhua News Agency published 'Xinhua Investigation | Beware of AI 'Customer Service' Phone Scams,' and together with the Anti-Fraud Center of the Ministry of Public Security reminded the general public that if friends or relatives ask for a transfer through an unknown number, be sure to hang up and call back the person using the number originally saved in contacts to verify.

How to Protect Yourself

  • ✅ When receiving an unknown call and the other party does not speak, do not repeatedly make sounds to test; hang up directly and block the number to avoid malicious collection of voiceprint material.
  • ✅ When posting videos containing your clear voice on social media platforms, raise privacy awareness to avoid criminals using tools to extract voice data for model training.
  • ✅ If friends or relatives send a voice request for help and ask for a transfer through an unknown number or abnormal channel, be sure to hang up and call the person back using the number originally saved in contacts to verify.
  • ✅ Establish an internal family anti-fraud code word or special question method; when money transactions are involved, verify identity through the code word; in emergencies, you can directly call the police for help and verification.
