AI Voice Cloning Scam Targeting Seniors via Fake Bail/Surgery Calls

The victims are primarily seniors aged 60 and above who live alone or are empty-nesters, especially those unfamiliar with smartphones or AI technology. Driven by intergenerational affection and extreme sensitivity to the safety of their children and grandchildren, their immediate reaction upon hearing news like 'car accident' or 'detained' is that 'saving lives is paramount.' Exploiting seniors' limited information channels and lack of vigilance toward 'familiar voices,' scammers use cloned voices and urgent scripts to create emotional high pressure, causing seniors to abandon verification out of fear and anxiety, and hand over their lifetime savings in a short time.

  • 🚩 Incoming call displays an unfamiliar number or internet phone; the caller claims to be a relative with a similar yet unnatural voice, mechanical or emotionally inconsistent.
  • 🚩 Refuses video calls, or hangs up immediately after connecting under the pretext of poor signal, insisting on voice-only communication.
  • 🚩 Repeatedly emphasizes 'do not tell mom/dad or your spouse under any circumstances,' exploiting the senior's pride and fear of blame to prevent them from communicating with others.
  • 🚩 Demanding large sums of money with urgent reasons, such as 'bail money' or 'surgery fees,' and requiring the transfer or cash delivery to be completed in a very short time.
  • 🚩 Designating informal methods such as offline cash collection or purchasing anonymous cards, rather than real-name transfers through bank accounts.
  • 🚩 Monotonous or repeated background sounds during the call, or vague answers when asked about family details, such as giving irrelevant answers when asked 'Did you visit last time?'

How to Protect Yourself

  • ✅ Establish a 'safety passphrase' with seniors: Family members set up a phrase known only to insiders; if the caller cannot answer it during a call, it can be judged as a scam.
  • ✅ Insist on hanging up and calling back to verify: Any urgent call claiming to be a relative should be hung up first, then called back using the original number in the mobile phone contact list; if unreachable, contact other family members or call the police immediately.
  • ✅ Dual safeguards by banks and children: Remind seniors that large transfers must be reported to their children beforehand. Bank staff should proactively inquire and temporarily suspend processing if they notice a senior making remittances while on the phone, and can dial 96110.
  • ✅ Enable 'Overseas Incoming Call Blocking' and 'Harassment Call Blocking' functions on smartphones, download the National Anti-Fraud Center app, and enable call warnings and risk prompts.
  • ✅ Communities and families regularly conduct anti-fraud education, using real AI voice synthesis cases to help seniors recognize 'urgent transfer' scripts and dispel concerns about 'not bringing shame to the family.'
