← Sticker Wall SCAM · DETAIL

AI Multi-Role Online Romance Scam: Fraudsters use voice changing and persona cloning to impersonate romantic partners and their relatives, fabricating long-term relationship networks to build trust before soliciting funds.

Victims are predominantly middle-aged single males, though some female victims are also targeted. They are typically financially independent with clear emotional gaps, highly dependent on virtual relationships, and lack offline social verification capabilities. After meeting individuals on online platforms, they develop a strong sense of trust through prolonged chatting, voice calls, and video interactions. When the other party requests money under the guise of family illness, urgent financial needs, or joint investments, victims often fall prey to sunk-cost fallacy and reluctance to seek verification from family and friends, leading them to continue transferring funds over months or even years. Some are unable to accept that the relationship was entirely fabricated even after losing their life savings.

Who Gets Targeted

骗局怎么运作

  • Fraudsters approach targets on dating or social apps using sophisticated personas, with profile pictures sourced from the internet or AI-generated. Backgrounds are often set as Hong Kong/Taiwan residents, military officers, or entrepreneurs, rapidly building rapport through daily greetings and high-frequency voice messages. Initially, no financial topics are raised, focusing purely on emotional resonance to stabilize the relationship.
  • Once trust is established, fraudsters introduce AI voice modulation or voice cloning tools, playing multiple roles such as the romantic partner, the partner's mother, best friends, and colleagues. By switching identities across different WeChat or QQ accounts, they trick the victim into believing they are interacting with the partner's real social circle, enhancing the authenticity of the relationship.
  • Fraudsters use AI-synthesized photos, AI-generated military officer credentials, or corporate name cards to present proof of identity at critical milestones, dispelling the victim's doubts. Some syndicates also forge corporate homepages and social media matrices to form a searchable identity endorsement chain.
  • After the relationship is solidified, fraudsters borrow money under the pretext of a family member's critical illness, project cash flow turnover, joint property purchases, or investment and financial management. Amounts progress from small to large, starting with a few hundred yuan to test the waters, and gradually escalating to tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of yuan. Each solicitation is pacified with repayment plans or more intimate promises.
  • When the victim's funds are exhausted or suspicions arise, fraudsters cut off contact by blocking, canceling accounts, or claiming a family emergency. Some syndicates resell the victim's information to other fraudulent departments or induce victims to take out online loans or mortgage properties to stay in the game, until the victim goes completely bankrupt.
  • There is a clear division of labor within the syndicate: copywriters, scripts, voice-changing technology, and identity materials are provided by specialists, frontline operators execute according to scripts, and funds are split and laundered through multi-tier accounts. Syndicates often entrenched overseas, exploiting jurisdictional differences to evade law enforcement, making post-incident victim rights protection and asset recovery extremely difficult.

红旗信号(看到这些快跑)

  • 🚩 The other party consistently refuses video calls or offline meetings. Even when video calls occur, the image is blurry, brief, and invariably interrupted by excuses of poor signal, failing to stably present natural interactions in the same setting.
  • 🚩 Claimed investment projects or wealth management platforms cannot be verified through official financial regulatory query channels. The platform interface is crude, domain names were recently registered, customer service is reachable only via instant messaging, and business licenses and filing information are missing.
  • 🚩 The other party frequently mentions a Hong Kong/Taiwan background, military officer, or entrepreneur status, but their linguistic habits and terminology do not match the claimed region. Abnormal acoustic features or similar baseline noise across multiple character voices can be heard in voice recordings.
  • 🚩 Reasons for borrowing money are heavily concentrated in templated scripts regarding family illness, project turnover, and joint home purchases. Each monetary request is accompanied by a promise of repayment coupled with new excuses for delay, forming a continuous cycle of borrowing.
  • 🚩 The other party's Moments (social media feed) or social media account content has an extremely low update frequency, highly consistent image styles with AI-generated traces, sparse comment section interactions, and lacks the randomness and acquaintance interactions typical of real-life scenarios.

How to Protect Yourself

  • ✅ Before establishing online relationships, verify the authenticity of identity through video calls, offline meetings, and requiring the other party to interact naturally across multiple scenarios. Maintain high vigilance toward those who refuse video calls or frequently interrupt them.
  • ✅ Use the National Anti-Fraud Center App or relevant official verification channels to check and verify information provided by the other party, such as investment platform domain names, corporate names, and military credentials. Do not easily trust documents and screenshots provided unilaterally by the other party.
  • ✅ When the other party makes requests for loans or investments, immediately consult family, friends, or community police officers. Do not make unilateral decisions driven by sunk costs or personal pride. Any action requiring money transfers to unverified individuals should be regarded as a high-risk signal.
  • ✅ Enable two-factor authentication and transfer alert features on social platforms and banking apps, set single-transaction and daily cumulative transfer limits, regularly check for abnormal account changes, and immediately preserve chat logs and transfer vouchers to report to the police upon discovering a scam.
