AI Data Annotation False Workstation Scam: Fake Interviews and Fake Workstations Followed by Fee Extraction and Disappearance

The primary victims are college students, recent graduates, stay-at-home mothers, and flexible employment groups who generally lack social experience and hold high-income illusions about the AI industry. Their psychological vulnerabilities center on three aspects: first, seeing that annotation positions have low barriers to entry and require no professional background, they eagerly seize what looks like a stable employment opportunity; second, they are blinded by the sense of legitimacy created by fake interviews, fake agreements, and fake workstations arranged by scammers, completely dropping their guard once they psychologically confirm the authenticity of the position; third, after paying minor initial fees, they fall victim to the sunk cost fallacy, failing to cut losses when faced with subsequent escalating fees and instead investing more in hopes of recovering their money.

Who Gets Targeted

骗局怎么运作

  • Step 1: Mass-publish AI data annotation recruitment information on mainstream recruitment platforms such as BOSS Zhipin and WeChat/QQ part-time job groups. Advertise alluring conditions such as daily wages of 200 to 500 yuan, monthly earnings exceeding 10,000 yuan, no experience required, and no educational limits. Exploit job seekers' curiosity about new AI careers and their profit-seeking mentality to initially filter out target groups lacking industry awareness.
  • Step 2: Arrange online or offline fake interviews where interviewers are dressed formally and follow standardized procedures. Some gangs rent office buildings to set up fake workstations and fake systems, signing fake employment agreements with job seekers to create the complete experience of a legitimate corporate recruitment process, ensuring victims completely drop their guard after psychologically confirming the position's authenticity.
  • Step 3: Collect fees in batches under pretexts such as pre-job training, software usage authorization, workstation deposits, and data confidentiality fees. Initially collect hundreds of yuan in small deposits to lower vigilance, then charge thousands of yuan more in training fees or software license fees under the pretext that advanced projects require higher-level permissions. Some gangs induce victims to sign training loan agreements, borrowing money from financial platforms to pay the fees.
  • Step 4: Arrange a tiny number of low-difficulty annotation tasks and pay meager commissions (such as tens to a couple of hundred yuan) to manufacture the illusion of real work and stimulate victims to invest more. Subsequently, delay task assignment using excuses such as substandard data quality, required retraining, or project suspension, forcing victims to continuously inquire in waiting without getting effective responses.
  • Step 5: When victims' awareness of rights protection awakens or fee collections reach the gang's expected ceiling, the masterminds close system portals, disband work groups, deregister recruitment accounts, quickly terminate leases on rented office spaces, and the organizers lose contact and flee. Some gangs carry out one final round of harvesting just before fleeing by claiming that extra handling fees must be paid to return deposits.

红旗信号(看到这些快跑)

  • 🚩 Recruitment postings advertise daily wages far exceeding normal industry levels while emphasizing no experience and no educational restrictions, offering extremely low job requirements paired with promised high returns—which starkly contradicts the market reality that genuine AI data annotation roles require specific professional training and offer transparent compensation.
  • 🚩 The interview process is abnormally short, with interviewers focusing solely on whether candidates can pay training fees, software fees, and other charges, showing no interest in competence or alignment, not even checking resumes or portfolios. The candidate hiring pass rate is close to 100%, defying normal recruitment workflows.
  • 🚩 Fee categories are numerous and layered, escalating from deposits to training fees, software license fees, data confidentiality fees, and workstation rental fees. Legitimate part-time jobs will never require workers to pay multiple upfront fees, and every fee lacks legitimate invoices or contractual guarantees.
  • 🚩 The signed agreements feature ambiguous headings and questionable official seals, actually functioning as training agreements rather than labor contracts. Some agreements contain loan clauses hinting at financial platform intervention; victims sign what they believe is a labor employment contract while being bound to a training loan.
  • 🚩 Task allocation volume is extremely sparse with negligible amounts. Upon task completion, commissions are withheld or refused under various pretexts, and the operation fails to provide a continuous, stable source of projects and task data. The so-called system backend may simply be a temporarily constructed web shell.
  • 🚩 Office addresses are remote or located in unverified shared workspaces. The recruiter's name cannot be found with matching records in the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System, or registration details severely conflict with recruitment postings. The enterprise's establishment date is extremely short, yet it claims to undertake large-scale major annotation projects.

真实案例

  • According to NetEase News reports, public security authorities busted a 100-person fraud gang that defrauded training fees under the guise of online part-time jobs. The gang posted data annotation and other part-time positions on recruitment platforms, charging victims under the names of training fees and software fees, involving over 25 million yuan. The principal culprit has been subjected to criminal coercive measures in accordance with the law, and case details have been publicly reshared by multiple media outlets.
  • According to Sina Tech reports in April 2026, a gang recruited annotators under the guise of AI comic drama production, claiming that paying a 2,000 yuan tuition fee would allow them to take orders and earn 100,000 yuan per month. After paying, victims were arranged to watch pre-recorded video courses and could not actually obtain the promised order volume. After multiple job seekers complained to the platform, the recruitment platform intervened to investigate.
  • According to Tencent News reports in August 2026, police cracked down on a fake work scam where 11 suspects charged high placement fees in multiple locations under the guise of arranging AI data annotation internship positions. They conducted fake interviews, signed forged agreements with job seekers, and sent victims to work at fake internship locations. Victims paid thousands to tens of thousands of yuan before discovering the positions were fabricated.

Official Stance

  • In June 2026, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the Office of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Public Security, and the National Financial Regulatory Administration jointly issued a risk alert warning against recruitment fraud behaviors such as 'recruitment-to-training' and 'training loans,' reminding job seekers to be highly vigilant against any position requiring upfront payments.
  • In July 2025, the People's Daily stable employment column published a special report titled 'Want to Work, Pay First: Fake Jobs, Real Fraud,' exposing recruitment fraud schemes that collect training fees under the guise of popular positions like data annotation, and calling on job seekers to verify corporate qualifications and reject unverified fees.
  • According to official information released by BOSS Zhipin, the platform identified and handled multiple recruitment-to-training scams disguised as AI data annotation part-time jobs in 2026. In a typical case, scammers collected 2,690 yuan in training fees but failed to provide the promised task assignments. The platform has launched anti-fraud early-warning mechanisms and transferred clues to public security authorities.

How to Protect Yourself

  • ✅ Enter the company's full name on the official National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System website to check the recruiter's industrial and commercial registration information, establishment date, and business scope. Maintain high vigilance against enterprises registered for less than half a year or whose business scope excludes data processing. Immediately terminate communication if the company name in recruitment information does not match system query results (also check whether the insured headcount is zero and whether the registered address is a centralized hosting virtual address).
  • ✅ According to Article 9 of the Labor Contract Law, employers shall not require workers to provide guarantees or collect property from workers under other names. Unconditionally reject and report any positions requiring upfront deposits, training fees, software fees, or confidentiality fees prior to employment.
  • ✅ Carefully confirm during signing that you are signing a labor contract rather than a training agreement or service agreement, specifically checking whether it contains loan clauses or installment repayment terms. If encountering demands to apply for loans to pay fees, immediately terminate the application and preserve all chat records and document evidence.
  • ✅ Maintain complete traceability including recruitment screenshots, chat history, transfer receipts, signed agreement documents, and office site photos. Once scammed, immediately dial 110 to report to the police, file a complaint with the 12333 labor security hotline, and simultaneously report the matter to cyberspace administration and market regulation authorities.
